MYP 2 (Grade 7) - Visual Arts

Unit description:

In this unit students explored the history and techniques of mosaic art. They learned how mosaics tell stories and reflect cultural identities. Students experimented with materials and methods, creating an original mosaic project that conveys a personal or cultural narrative. Through research, hands-on practice, and reflection, they appreciate the relevance of traditional art in contemporary society. Those artworks will be exhibited in our upcoming Arts exhibition which will take place on the 4th of April at Morfi Gallery.

IB PYP 2 - Visual Arts Trip

Our grade 7 students have been working with acids and alkalines. They have experimented with how acids and metals react, measuring their pH values. They investigated whether antacids/digestive pills actually work and how they work.
As part of our Unit of Inquiry: "How We Express Ourselves," our IB PYP 2 students explored how creativity helps us understand and communicate feelings and perspectives. They recently went on a field-trip which provided a hands-on experience that deepened their understanding of artistic expression.
Our journey began with a guided tour of Mr. Phillip Yapanis' sculpture park. Mr. Yapanis is a renowned sculptor known for his expressive bronze and mixed-media works that explore human emotion and movement. As we walked through his park, students engaged with his sculptures, discussing how art can convey feelings, stories, and perspectives.
Following the tour, students participated in an open-ended performance session, where they were encouraged to express themselves through movement, drama, or storytelling - reinforcing the idea that creativity takes many forms.
In Mr. Yapanis’ workshop, students gained valuable insight into the bronze sculpture-making process, learning how an initial idea is transformed into a finished piece through various stages of molding, casting, and refining.
Our final stop was the gallery space, where students had the opportunity to explore different artworks, reflect on their meanings, and engage in sketching activities to capture their own artistic inspirations.
Teacher: Christianna Orros
School Value - Lifelong Learning: Students explored new ways of expressing themselves through visual and performing arts. By engaging with Mr. Yapanis' work and learning about sculpture-making, they expanded their understanding of creativity beyond the classroom.
School Value - Collaboration: During the open-ended performance session, students worked together to express emotions and stories through movement and drama, strengthening their teamwork and communication skills.
School Value - Responsibility: Throughout the trip, students demonstrated responsibility by following instructions, respecting the artwork, and participating thoughtfully in discussions and activities
